Umm, Hello?
July 29, 2026I think I last had a blog in 2012 or so. It was the sort of blog where I’d spend weeks putting together some comprehensive tutorial-like thing on some topic or other. I was proud of the results but as far as I know, with a few exceptions, nobody ever read those posts.
Lately with the enshittification of all-things-internet I’m both repulsed by the idea of being part of it, while also stubbornly trying to hold on to what was so great about the web; conflicted between leaving outright and trying to stake some claim on a small part of it.
So anyway I’ve got a new blog here. It’s custom built plain HTML which I’m generating from markdown files with a little program I wrote in Odin.
Some random stuff I’d like to do here:
- Back in the early 2000s before I got into Ruby on Rails I had a lot of fun doing basic CGI stuff. I think it’d be fun to deploy little programs along with this site. I could use datastar to make a little game on the page, for example.
- I like bearblog’s vibes quite a bit and the emergent stuff you can do with it (see this for example). I’d like to make my site generator support things like that.
- AI slop is soul crushing and getting out of control. It might be fun to write something deliberately wrong but with a straight-face — (all em dashes on this site will be written by human fingers) maybe some crawler someday will take the poison pill. It’s the little things, you know?
- I’ll use a blockchain to— haha, j/k.
- There’s some table-stakes features I want to build eventually, like an RSS feed for instance.
- Definitely writing down ideas in little essays, but also possibly write some fiction. And I also don’t want to totally preclude the idea of posting some technical stuff, either… but for fun, not for the views.
I guess this is sounding like a bit of a “digital garden” type thing. I just want to have a website to tinker with. Could be fun!
